FRAUD WARNING

It is tax season again and fraudsters will use this opportunity to attempt to scam personal and corporate tax payers out of their hard earned money. Please be aware that fraudsters impersonating Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) can contact you by various methods including phone call or email. We want our clients to know what to look for and to how to protect themselves against fraud.

When in doubt, ask yourself the following (Retrieved from the CRA Website March 9, 2016):

  • Did I sign up to receive online mail through CRA’s My Account, My Business Account, or Represent a Client?
  • Did I provide my email address on my income tax and benefit return to receive mail online?
  • Am I expecting more money from CRA?
  • Does this sound too good to be true?
  • Is the requester asking for information I would not provide in my tax return?
  • Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file for me?

DO NOT provide any personal information. FOUNDATIONS LLP recommends that you ask the caller for their agent ID number and contact number to call them back. Any legitimate agent has an ID number and is required to provide it.
